Invictus Background
The Invictus Series in the Caesar Guerini line is one of the more technologically advanced over-under shotguns on the market. With easily replaceable parts the firearm promises to be quantified by not “not by how long you can shoot it, but how long your children and grandchildren can.” This maintenance can be made by the highly qualified dedicated smiths that Caesar Guerini USA staffs in Cambridge, Maryland. In addition to the already outstanding pitstop program which easily will extend the life of a Guerini far past that of a competitor, this technology promises to create a consistent and reliable experience for any shooter. Aesthetically, the Invictus comes in grades one through nine that increase the intricacy of the engraving. At Invictus I, there is a medium amount of engraving on an all nickel finished receiver. At the Invictus IX level, gold is added to the receiver, semi precious gemstones inlaid into creature eyes, boss style forend and sideplates to extend the amount of metal, and hand chasing applied to the engraving to heighten and perfect the look. Reliability and a trim look come together to make any Invictus series not only functional but also classically beautiful.
Artco: A New Direction
In a departure from traditional engraving, Caesar Guerini added a new work to their Invictus line. Titled the “Artco”, this work takes a modernist approach to receiver engraving. Rather than sticking to the old scroll work and game scenes, the Artco utilizes abstract forms to fill the spaces in a show of multiple shades and a balanced pattern of lines. In the words of Caesar Guerini UK, this approach focused on “create[ing] a new grade that would offer something unique, without compromising the attributes that make it so popular.”
The body of the receiver possesses many crescent-like shapes which come in both engraving and relief to create different shades around the hinge pins. The top lever and receiver tail sport more of the same and only on the raised portion of the receiver and the bottom are things changed. The sides and bottom, framed by the crescents, have fields of multidirectional lines that layer over one another generating a sort of web. Here, as well as the hinge pin, red enamel has been inlaid to give the Artco a regal design that catches the eye. Finally, between the lines, fine abstract designs fill the spaces in a subtle grey tone that adds depth to the liminal sections.
As a work, varying opinions have arisen surrounding this modern approach. Some feel its eye-catching, sporty, and racy. Others feel the look to be unappealing. Several individuals have mentioned that they can’t shake the resemblance to theUnion Jack from their minds. Regardless of tastes, the Artco comes from the hands of a master engraver working in a reputable engraving company. This would be Dario Cortini who now leads the teams of Bottega C. Giovannelli who do all the engraving work for Caesar Guerini. From the Summit to the Invictus IX, “Bottega C. Giovanelli” can be seen engraved on the bottom of all Guerinis. A look around the store reveals their collaboration with Rizzini as well. The Giovanelli engraving house has a long history in traditional engraving and the Artco, despite coming from a different artistic background, adds nuance and diversity to the market.
Closing Thoughts?
While for the most part the over-under world has mostly tolerated traditional engraving styles and the sporty “blank” receivers, it’s refreshing to see a company take a chance at a perhaps untapped taste in the industry. Engraving is a costly effort and contributes greatly to the price of a firearm. Alternative works like this test the boundaries of what is desired in the industry and open the doors for new tastes.
Caesar Guerini is an Italian manufacturer of over-under Shotguns with a leading industry standard in responsive, quick, customer service. Their entry level over-under is called the Summit Sporting. This shotgun comes in a variety of gauges and lengths from .410 bore to 12 gauge and 28 inch barrels to 32 inch. Add-on features include left handed models and an option for an adjustable comb. With a Caesar Guerini, quality is assured through their customer care, premium material and expert craftsmanship.
Models
The Summit line has a wider variety of models which are: Summit Compact, Summit Ascent, Summit Impact, Summit Trap, Summit Trap Compact, Summit Impact Trap Combo, and Summit Limited. This variety looks to accommodate the greater needs of their customers by filling niches for adjustability, physical stature/height, and clay game preferences.
All manufacturers have terms that can differ for each model’s different features. Here are a few of the Guerini lingos: The compact has a shorter length of pull. The Ascent has a Monte Carlo stock and raised rib for those who prefer a more erect or heads up shooting posture. The Summit Impact has an adjustable rib as well as an adjustable comb for those looking to fine tune their experience whether it be for one or many sports.
Caesar Guerini shotguns also come in combo sets. Any twenty gauge frame can support smaller barrel sets and can be manufactured and fit to your frame at any point after your purchase. If you’re trying to save space or just love the feeling of your Summit, combo sets and extra barrels are of interest to you.
Receiver
Mechanically these fitment designs all surround the boxlock. Guerini boxlocks claim to be improved by a rounded and replaceable trunnion as well as a large lug at the back of the receiver which locks into the monoblock. This lug is also easily replaceable which contributes to their ability to service the Summit into new working order with a simple 14 day pitstop. They also coat the receiver in their proprietary “Invisalloy” protective finish. This finish guards against tarnish and rust and leaves a nice shine to the chrome plating.
Barrels
The barrels of the Summit are blued, have MAXIS extended chokes or Selecta extended chokes (depending on gauge), Duo Con forcing cones, Maxis over boring, and a ventilated mid-rib. Dimensionally, the barrels are over bored to .735 inches and the forcing cones are 5 inches long. For those not familiar with forcing cones and over boring – they increase shot density and improve your pattern.
Monoblock
All Caesar Guerini’s have a Damascus pattern laser etched into the side of the monoblock which retains lubricant. This helps to decrease the wear on the receiver from frequent opening and closing. It also has a very stylish aesthetic not found on other shotguns.
Safety and Trigger
The safety on the Summit is a manual but on request can be swapped for an automatic which is more typically found on a field shotgun. The trigger on the Summit can be adjusted forward or backwards a quarter of an inch to accommodate your preference and finger length.
Stock
The grip of the Summit sports a decently sized checkered palm swell and cast to fit a left or right handed shooter, depending on the model. Adjustable combs are an option as an add on to further increase modularity. Both adjustable combs and left handed options increase the cost of the firearm and are done with great attention to detail.
Accessories
All Caesar Guerini Summits come with six extended choke tubes, a Negrini break down hard case, and a nice set of protective velvet sleeves for the stock and barrel. The Summit Sporting comes with the following choke constrictions: one Cylinder, one Skeet, two Improved Cylinder, one Light Modified and one Modified.
Aesthetics
Aesthetics are a subjective term referring to the beauty of an object. When discussing the beauty of a shotgun, most eyes gravitate to the receiver (If they haven’t already grasped at the woodgrain). In the case of the Summit, the receiver is engraved. All Guerini engraving begins at Bottega C. Giovanelli with lasers and finishes with hand chasing (following the laser with hand done refinement). In keeping with tradition, the engraved images depict acanthus scrolls intricately flowing and rolling in a clean design. On the sides, the receiver tang and the hinge pin scroll appears to sprout from the metal. On the bottom, more scroll wraps around a large rectangular shape which acts as a frame for the acanthus. The rectangle looks much like a Greek or Roman column associating this work with classical antiquity. It almost appears like a statement of the product line. The Summit is the supporting foundation of the Guerini production and captures a sense of longevity and timelessness.
Another form of aesthetic value is generated in the wood. Caesar Guerini stocks are made from Turkish Circassian Walnut which harbor a wide variety of patterns from straight lines, to waves, curls, and a variety of irregular designs. No two guns are the same when it comes to their wood, but rest assured that their wood grains display beauty and quality. To enhance its natural beauty, each stock has a hand-rubbed oil finish to give the wood a shine and to protect it from moisture.
Opinion
Here at Orion Outdoors Company, we keep a healthy stock of Summit guns in stock. They are a reliable and popular firearm and covered by the elite Caesar Guerini Customer service should you ever need it. Having a well staffed service center in Cambridge Maryland, they are easy to deal with and attentive to customer’s concerns and needs. With the included pitstops, which revive the mechanical ability of the firearm, and the robust oversized designs of the lock up, the Summit Sporting will almost certainly outlive it’s owner. The Summit comes with three included pitstops meaning that after twenty-five thousand rounds, you’ll have a fresh gun ready for twenty-five thousand more.
Conclusion
For those looking for a long term over-under option with quality material, manufacturing, and service, it’s hard to go wrong with Caesar Guerini’s entry level Summit line. It is a value purchase that won’t leave you disappointed.
